So should you buy a Windows, Linux or Mac based computer? What is the difference between them? It's a difficult decision when you are looking to buy a new computer...
What are the main differences between Macs, PC or Linux?
Nowadays, the difference between Macs and Windows is small. The operating systems have converged a great deal recently, so they are not nearly as different as they used to be. Linux is a free 'open source' operating system and often comes with the cheaper 'netbook' computers.

What do Macs do better?
Mac's tend to be more secure. Viruses, spyware and malware are rarely an issue, so you don't have to load a ton of security software just to get onto the web. They usually connect to other hardware such as cameras and mp3 players with a lot less hassle and they have a great range of creative use - sorting photos, making books, editing videos or composing music, all ‘out of the box’. If you have a copy of Windows, you can also run that on a Mac at the same time.

Mac technical support is also excellent. With Apple Store’s dotted all over London, you can make a free appointment with a ‘Genius’ to help you solve any issues you may have and most of the store host a range of free hour long lessons on using Mac software.
What does Windows do better?
A PC's big plus point is that almost everyone knows how to use Windows. You probably work with one in your office. So if you don’t want to learn a new operating system, then a PC might be for you. There is also a slightly wider range of hardware and software which works with PC’s though the gap narrows every day. Bottom of the range PCs are also cheaper than a Mac, however, when you compare the spec of a PC equal to that of a Mac the difference is a lot smaller. Vista or Windows 7? If you're buying a new computer, make sure it's installed with Windows 7. It's a smoother, faster and easier to use version of the software.

What does Linux do better?
Linux is a secure OS and works well on 'netbooks' and desktop computers. Being 'open source' software, it appeals to those who enjoy having control over their computer but to the uninitiated, Linux can be a difficult system to understand fully.

Which should I buy?
It depends what you use your computer for. If you are on a tight budget and just want to use email and write letters, then Windows or Linux will do the job fine. If you want to get more creative or are worried about security, then consider buying a Mac. Go to a store, play with all the machines and decide from there, which is the best for you.
